Fuasto-sterling is introducing the social construction of sex and how it is that humans come up with this system of enforcing only two genders by creating the criteria with which to determine and label people into a binary. She argues that if we chose to categorize people differently, we could have infinite sex categories, thus proving that the idea of binary sex categories is kind of made up by medical professionals. She uses intersex bodies to showcase the fact that when we do find bodies that don"t conform, we choose to alter them to fit instead of creating new categories of natural variation. The doctors used to call this group hermaphrodites a medicalized term, but the term intersex comes from the community itself and that is what we use now.
