Test 2: Alien 1979 10/17/2013
Android: a robot with human appearance. When they were originally made they were all male. Humanlike
▯ “male” they accomplish to idealize human “other” (someone who looks like us but is different which
reflects who we are) provides us insight into who we are! A prespective into who we are.
Synonymatic to “the other” : androids
Human connection: flaws
Science officer (Ash): the android, you first started to suspect him because he didn’t have much emotion
but the crew didn’t pick up on that because they thought that’s how he was because when we do science
that’s when we are most robotic; it wasn’t expected from him because of our thought of “science”.
Replicants are not the origins whom you typically associate and want to grant recognition
Is there room for science in human emotion?
People don’t like Obama not because where he comes from but because he isn’t an “AMERICAN” &
doesn’t look like the rest of the presidents▯ just like androids have different origins, but how much does that
matter? How significant is that fact?
In this movie Ash does not have to get recognition because he ACTS like a science officer ▯ this is called “
passing “ especially if it is understood he is a science officer, they think all he cares about is knowledge and
discovery (the stereotype of science officers) passing is important for anyone is the other and must
negotiate with the nonothers. Ex. People will pass with other ethnic groups or fit in. Passing will lead to
incorrect or invalid assumption. This is the theme!
As the science officer ash is interested in alien life form because they were supposed to keep the alien alive
even if it means the destruction of the entire crew. The entire crew is not worthy.
The eclipse of nature: what is the future of the human nature as our technology continues to improve ?
decoration, we’re not significant; superfluous. Ex; not they don’t send humans outerspace they send
machines because that’s so much easier. Humans are obstacles they are in the way.
Science: all scientist want is knowledge is what we think. Scientists are themselves in the service of other
values. Science is not pure there are other values at work here.
Ash’s cooporation is Wayland Yutan; they are engaged in terraforming which means finding uninhabited
planets and making them habitable for human sources (mining company). Makes you think of colonization.
There is no such thing as PURE SCIENCE; what the director is trying to say. They are used by individuals
who’s thoughts and purpose are not pure at all, they are interested in applications which will promote the
cause of domination.
When the android is incapacitated ash says he admires the alien life form for its purity. This is because the
alien is just to live and reproduce. The essence of life itself is to live and reproduce (in its pure form)
reproduction through violent appropriation force; blind, amoral, unsentimental, it looks a lot like rape,
Life is the process not the being through who the process is being propagated
Culture or civilization is what we commonly talk about. Civilized fashion is how we reproduce TERMINOLOGY:
Anthropocentrism: centers on human centrism
Centrism: any view of the world or cosmos that centers on human concern or aspiration.
Ex: brings other animals to the world (owning pets) but you are at the center.
Alien life form is not anthropocentric
Adopted by human beings
Biocentrism: centers on non human centrism
Adopted by the alien life form
Ash is biocentrism
Anthropomorphism: any projection of human values or concerns onto non human others.
Morphism: refers to shape
Ex: when we think our animals love us, naming our cars,
For the most part it is harmless but sometimes we run astray when we imagine something has human
values or concerns
Will getting us in trouble if we view things are human central or human friendly
Director wants to link this to domination of nature which then links to self destructive
Self destructive is the moral message in this movie
Evolution: perfection ▯ alien life form
We like to think we’re at the top of the food chain
This is supposed to make us feel unsettle able,
Hero is Ripley… again having a strong female lead
• Frankenstein( doctor victor Frankenstein) what is taboo about this individuals? We often find in science
fiction is individuals breaking taboos.
• Frankenstein uses spare human parts to create lives. Religious moral is scientists should not be taking
God’s job and creating life.
• He violated the taboo of science!
• The monstrosity of the monster was visible and obvious to everyone in Frankenstein. The original
androids were creations; manmade • Monster ▯ monstrum; a warning a sign, a caution.
• This a taboo because you create forces beyond your control ▯ hubris, arrogance, pride
• In the android in the alien movie is that it cannot perform the same warning Frankenstein performed to
us because his appearance was not obvious to us
• What we create does not reflect our hubris, arrogance, is what ridley scott is saying to. We’ve gotten so
good at this. We are unable to see the signs of our hubris, arrogance.
• Scientists believe stem cells can be anything you want; ex. They can create you a new liver. It is
immoral in some states.
• The most obvious ex:
o is the nuclear energy and weaponization of energy
o medical technology
science itself is or has become monstrous! They have no obvious limits
How is that monster any different from the people behind the experimentation?
Human beings are expendable
Frankenstein is called : the modern Prometheus; “father of humans” “stole fire from the Gods”
Fire is ambiguity itself , fire will warm, create but fire will also destroy and harm: what the theological myth.
Author of Frankenstein: Mary Shalley
If you use nuclear fuel to create energy we don’t know how to store it
From the feminist prospective she thinks sure you can create life but to what expense she compares it to
giving birth! The author of this story lost her mother due to her birth
RIPLEY: doesn’t have a first name. She doesn’t follow the female characteristics; she isn’t an ornament!
At first she was a BITCH, she doesn’t have to be a bitch to fit into the male enterprise. She’s the only one
who believes the alien shouldn’t come in the ship. She follows quarantine protocol! She’s tough and
understands protocol knows why it is in place!
Plucky: (an adjective to describe Ripley) to take advantage of every situation given to you! To have a
practical wisdom. Women are viewed as emotional and hysterical and unstable not plucky.
Hysterical: Hysteria means a female with a wound
Some of ripley’s best qualities are unknown in a social setting, we only meet her when she’s on her own.
She wasn’t dependent on these people at the end of the movie. Moral: a lot of your strongest qualities won’t be recognized (in real life)
You learn at an early age how to continue your own work without making the men feel incompetent.
She’s a cypher : you would never think for her to be a hero or a SURVIVOR
Ridley scott is good at getting moral messages of gender roles stereotypes.
Think of how different it is where woman are given different roles.
Mulhall’s Thesis: “LIFE ITSELF IS MONSTROUS”
Humans are also monsters but we are unwitty monsters
We too have the same capacities as aliens but we are blinded by it. We do have the capacities but why
don’t we know that or are ashamed by it? Unsentimental, amoral; is the way the alien treats humans.
The facehuggers are the eggs which are a stage in a lifecycle in which to find an orphas/host/parasite in
which in can insert their DNA “incubators” when they give birth this is a “chest burster” while doing this the
chest burster kills the host. Then we have the emergence of the xenonmorph or the QUEEN & that the
social structure is matriarchy which means mom is in charge; this is a gov put in charge by a women.
Xenophobia: fear or hatred of strangeness
Test 2: alienS (with an S)▯ james cameron (1926) 10/17/2013
The moving from alien to aliens is that there is more/many kinds of alien
The primary significance is that the first time you see them in a social structure which we learn it is a
collective of source. A collective that is very much like our on society and in some way superior to us.
It is very easy for us to imagine killing only ONE alien but in the second movie you meet the aliens in a
social setting and they might even have a second culture.
Rather than meeting one we meet an alien species. Meeting the aliens is very much as looking in a mirror.
Aliens used to be the other but because there was only one of them.
Ripley is a mother which is known as foreshadowing! We learn something about her in this movie we don’t
in the first. Her daughter died and Ripley slept through her daughters existence. Her daughter died of old
age at age 66. Ripley is not only a mother but her only child is now dead.
We got a mother who wasn’t around to protect or raise her child (ripley).
In this movie ripley appears to be living an after life. She is still alive but what would make her life
meaningful of seeing her daughter is not there.
The last thing the daughter remembers is her mother breaking a promise and she is haunted by that
There is a lot of grief and anger in the forming of after life in ripley
She goes in the voyage because she wants to eliminat
