The origins of theatre: the impulse towards theatre, ritual and ceremony. -shaman: religious mediator between the human world and the spirit world, similar to actors. Sacred vs secular: rituals and ceremonies often contribute to theatre today. -audience and performer used to be really linked, now very separated (now trying to close gap again) -when cause and effect became less of focus and aesthetics became more important in ritual, it became theatre: bob vs joe rain dance example. -theatre exists because: we are mimetic beings, we seek order, we are communal beings, we use (cid:862)(cid:373)asks(cid:863, we enjoy and need entertainment. -liminal space: the space in between imaginary and real world (stage) -communitas (togetherness/community feeling: normative (description, regular/normal, a feeling of community that has been stated but not necessarily felt, church, etc, spontaneous (feeling, everyone as one spontaneously, joy of winning basketball game, etc. Theatre of restoration: new theatre, patents, given to two men, controlled all theatre, actresses.
