A process- a transferring and sharing of messages for creating meaning. Messages- words, sounds, actions, and gestures that people express to one another when they interact. Symbol- a word, sound, action, or gesture that refers to something else. Language- a verbal symbol that allows up to take words and translate the into meaning. Shared code- we have to all be on the same page: encoding (giving the information) vs decoding (receiving the information, diverse channels, evaluation. It never fails, it is changing forms from one to another: communication will solve all of our problems. Communication shapes our world, and perception affects how we see communication. What is perception: noticing- mindfulness, paying attention, organizing- building a framework. Mindfulness- involves paying attention and absorbing as much detail as you can. Self-fulfilling prophecy- interaction is influenced by preconceived ideas about you or the receiver. Language- directs our attention to certain aspects of people. Perception as organizing includes 3 types of schemas.
