Robert hooke-coined the word cell, comes from latin word cellula which means small. Was first to observe and describe single cell organisms. Cell theory-1839 by schleiden & schwann: all organisms composed of 1 or more cells, cell is smallest unit having properties of life, all cells come from pre-existing cells. Can survive on it"s own or has potential to do so. The um is a micrometer one millionth of a meter. The bigger a cell is, the less surface area there is per unit volume inside. Above a certain size, material cannot be moved in or out of cell fast enough. Ex) a tennis ball has a greater surface to volume ratio than a basketball. Main component of cell membranes- plasma membrane. On the outside of the cell in humans is the extracellular matric (ecm) is extremely thin. Model from membrane is the fluid-mosaic model. Glucose gets converted to pyruvate which has 3 carbons.
