Animals obtain and ingest their food in different ways: Filter feeders: sift small organisms or food particles from water. Ex: humpback whales use baleen, comblike plates attached to the upper jaw, to strain small invertebrate and fish from water. Type of suspension feeding: capturing food particles from surrounding medium. Maggots, leafminer caterpillar, larva of a moth. Substrate feeders: live in or on their food source and eat their way through it. Fluid feeders: suck nutrient-rich fluids from a living host. Bulk feeders: ingest large pieces of food. Question: snowy owls primarily eat small rodents, but will also eat smaller birds, name their diet category and type of feeding mechanism. Digestion: breaking down of food into molecules small enough for the body to absorb. Mechanical: broken down into small pieces by chewing. Chemical: breakdown of food by specific enzymes. Necessary because animals cannot directly use proteins, carbohydrates, fats and nucleic acids in food. Absorption: take-up of the products of digestion.
