Document Summary

When doing research on a concept such as domestic violence, it"s important to consider all of the ethical concerns that may arise throughout the course of the study. The researcher has to consider how valid their results will actually be. Considering individual factors that may hinder/motivate one to assault their spouse besides prosecution, one can"t generalize that prosecution would be the sole reason of lower domestic violence rates. Also, many spouses may lie about a repeated assault after the prosecution which would invalidate the data altogether. Another concern that may arise is the possibility that the study may expose the participants to more than minimal risk of personal harm. If the offenders are prosecuted, their spouses may experience emotional distress, depression, or regret. In addition, prosecuting these offenders may unexpectedly make them even more angry and violent, which they would take out on their spouse in turn.
