§ MIS-Management Information Systems
§ Focuses on solving business problems and creating new opportunities with
technology
§ Often shortened to Information Systems (IS)/Information Technology (IT)
o What is an MIS system?
§ MIS systems gather, process and manage information
Ex: Withdraw cash from ATM, help order airline tickets, help with
payroll processing, accounting systems etc.
o Who works in MIS?
§ Business-oriented, technically proficient individuals
Health care, banking, media, gaming, and hi-tech industry
(Microsoft and Lockheed Martin etc.)
§ Majority work in user organizations
Merck, Campbell Soup, NBCUniversal, Wal-Mart etc.
o How is MIS different from Computer Science?
§ Computer Science focuses on technology and MIS professionals apply
technology to business needs
o What do MIS people do?
§ MIS professionals are leaders who initiate design, and apply technology to
transform business functions and produce innovative products and services
Analyst-Study business problems and implement systems to solve
them
Consultant-Analyze problems and change business processes
Application Developer-Develop software to gather and store data
Data Analyst-Extracts and analyzes organizational data
Project Leader-Organize a team of analysts, programmers and
others to create an innovative solution
o What type of programming do you do in MIS?
§ MIS professionals will typically NOT write large and complex computer
programs but should know how the code works
Some will write code to create apps, while most will direct
computer programmers on what to build
o What are the salary ranges for MIS?
§ Entry-level salaries for students with a bachelors in MIS are between
$50,000-$60,000
o What are the prospects for women in MIS?
§ Women are leaders in MIS in many of the top firms in the nation
o What is the current demand for MIS workers?
§ There will always be a need for tech-savvy business professionals in the

§ Spans the range from theory through programming to cutting-edge

§ The work falls into three categories:
Designing and building software

o Ex: Storing information in databases, sending data over
networks or providing new approaches to security problems
