Document Summary

Know what the following types of coding are: rate, temporal, multiplex, population. Rate codes are the firing rate of a neuron over a given length of time (frequency) Temporal codes are timing of neural activity to give info about a stimulus. Multiplex codes are when neurons use multiple coding types such as rate codes & temporal codes simultaneously to code info. Population codes are either sparse or coarse. Sparse coding has each neuron responding to a very specific, narrow range of stimuli and then takes part in small representations within that. Coarse coding has a wide range of stimuli that can activate it and it is good for sensory and motor processing. Population codes are very useful because they allow the brain to achieve more complexity in signaling with fewer neurons and it makes the brain more robust against damage.
