Goal: to obtain information about people"s characteristics, opinions, attitudes, preferences, and/or behaviors using questionnaires or interviews. Not the same as self-report measures or assessment measures. Self-report can be used as assessment of subject variables. Need to be valid and reliable (standardized) Descriptive: determine percentage of population that has a certain characteristic, opinion, behavior, etc. Analytic: (goal of prediction) what are the relevant variables and how might they be related (correlational research) Describes patterns of basic life events and experiences and human characteristics. Attitude: a favorable or unfavorable evaluation of a particular person, group, object, event, or idea. Does the amount of studying you did for test 1 predict your grade on test. May reach more people, but not as high of a response rate. Panel surveys and experience sampling over time. 1936: alfred landon vs. fdr for president. Reader"s digest poll = landon would win by 15% At the time, only wealth members of society had telephones and automobiles.
