Module 1 - human growth and
development principles
Human Growth and Development
Development defined: “changes over time in physical structure, thought, or behavior of a person
as a result of both biologic and environmental influences”
Developmental stages: Children
● Pregnant female
○ Prenatal period: 0-birth
● Infancy: birth to 24 months
○ Neonate: 0-4 weeks
○ Infant: 4 weeks - 1 year
○ Toddler: 1 year -2-3 years
● Early childhood: 2-3 years - 5-6 years
● school -aged or middle childhood: 6-12 years
● Adolescents: 12 years - 18-21 years
○ Early
○ Middle
○ Late
● Life stages show the normative predictive aspect of development
Developmental stages: adults
● Young adult: 18-21 yrs to 40 yrs
● Middle adult: 40 yrs to 60-65 years
● Older adult: 60-65 yrs to death
Systems of domains of human development
● Cognitive: those aspects of development that involve the acquisition of skills in
perceiving, thinking, reasoning and problem solving as well as the intricate development
and use of language.
● Psychosocial: those aspects of development that involve acquiring relatively stable and
enduring traits as well as a sense of self in context of socialization and enculturation
● Physical - those changes that involve changes in physical shape and size, as well as
changes in the brain structure. Sensory capabilities and motor skills.
HGD Conceptual framework
Changing biological and psychological sensitivity alters response to the same or new stimuli

5 characteristics of development which make it normative and predictive, unique and
dynamic
● Multi-directional
○ Changes occur in every direction, not always a straight line. Impacted by gains
and losses, predictable patterns and unexpected transformation
● Multidisciplinary
○ Evidence comes from numerous academic field-psychology, biology, education,
sociology, neuroscience, economics, religion, anthropology, history, medicine,
genetics, and example of DACA:
● Multi-contextual
○ Historic context
○ Socioeconomic conditions
○ Culture
○ Lives are embedded in many context; historic conditions, economic constraints
and culture.
● Multicultural
○ Not just between nations but also within them
● Plastic (plasticity)
○ Every individual and every trait within each individual, can be altered at any point
in the life span. Change is ongoing, although neither random nor easy
Growth
● Measurable
○ Described in quantitative changes
○ Quantitative changes
○ Qualitative changes-quality driven
● Changes in physical size
○ Weight, BMI
