Sigmund Freud: Psychoanalysis is his theory
Psychoanalysis: People are affected and motivated by things that are in the unconscious mind.
Ex. Repressed memories
People with repressed memories are more susceptible to depression
Psychoanalysis theory: Three levels of the mind. The conscious mind(what a person is aware
of), Subconscious mind (houses memories that a person can access), Unconscious mind
(information that is really difficult to access)
When you are awake you are in your conscious mind. Dreams are made up of subconscious
material and unconscious material.
Conscious mind is where the ego is found
The superego is part of the subconscious mind
The ID is part of the unconscious mind
Ego: The Internal dialog- mediator of the personality- Tries to create balance between the
superego and the ID
Superego: The “Parent of the Personality” Houses Lessons (Morals, Rules, Right/Wrong)
ID: Animalistic part of our personality “Child in the personality”
If the Superego takes control- PTSD and depression. Person constantly thinks of what they
should have done in situations. Perfectionism. OCD. Think that nothing's good enough and can’t
relax.

If the ID takes control: More violence. A person may become more impulsive and it may lead to
depression.
Cognitive Theory: Expectations are too high. The person needs to work on Expectations,
perceptions, belief systems and thoughts (One of the most successful therapy approaches)
Don’t tell a depressed/ anxious person that their expectations are too high because it
may lead them to believe that it is their fault that they are depressed. Instead ask them
how they have been let down and challenge their belief system.
A-B-C
A= Activating Event
B= Belief System
C= Consequence (Emotional)
The hardest kind of death for people to cope with is an unexpected one.
Structuralism: Theory that is concerned with the structure of the brain
Functionalism: Theory that is concerned with the function of the brain
Both structuralism and functionalism deal with the consciousness of the brain
