Air in lungs/food in gi tract/fluid in renal tubules not in body. Interrelationship to maintain homeostasis: must first enter blood stream to enter body. Cleanses interstitial fluid to protect from pathogens. Transports materials in body via blood pumped by heart: o2, co2, nutrients, wastes, hormones, ions. Keeps o2 in blood to fuel cellular respiration. Not required for homeostasis, but can have an affect. Plasma co2 (40 mmhg) and o2 (100 mmhg) Positive/negative feedback: positive increases response to fix problem (eg. labor, negative decreases response to fix problem (eg. sweating to cool down) Enlarged hearts: bad in heart attack patients due to overcompensation of living tissue, good in trained athletes, difference is athletes allow hearts to rest for recovery. Erythrocytes: red blood cells, transport o2+co2. Leukocytes: white blood cells, defend body against pathogens. Platelets: cell fragments formed from megakaryocyte, form blood clots. Water: solvent for carrying other substances, absorb heat.
