Morrill hall was built in 1898 for ,000 and is currently the oldest used academic building of the university of maryland, college park. It is the sole academic building left unscathed by the great fire of 1912 which decimated nearly most of campus. Formerly known as the science hall, the building was renamed after senator justin morrill, founder of the morrill. In 1890, the second morrill act was passed that required the states to provide higher education of african americans by admitting them to predominantly white institutions or by allocating a portion of federal funds for segregated institutions. The university remained racially segregated until in 1951 when the university accepted its first african- American graduate student to the college park campus. Then in 1954 it admitted its first two. African-american undergraduates in accordance with the brown v. board of education decision by the u. s. supreme court.
