Earthquakes:
Earthquake: is a trembling or shaking movement of the Earth’s surface
2 types of waves: P waves and S waves they travel hundreds of miles per hour
What causes these waves?
Answer: seismic waves(underground waves)
These shock waves move through the earth. Only see effects not the actual
waves
They have specific movements that look like a snap
Waves created by movements
The tectonic plates r under tension and sometimes they move
The movement is accompanied by a sudden release of energy
Focus: the point where the movement occurs
Epicenter: the on the earth’s surface above the focus
Waves are strongest above the epicenter
The crust is made up of 20 huge slabs called Tectonic plates
Faults: plates are separated by huge cracks
Some faults r not only found on land but also sea
Movement of earth’s crust takes place primarily along the faults

Minor faults through earth’s crust along as well and movement along these
also occur
Tsunamis:
Tsunamis: is a wave train, or series of waves, generated in a body of water by an
impulsive disturbance that vertically displaces the water column
Regular waves are caused by wind
Tsunamis travel over greater distances at high speed( hundreds mph)
In deep water they aren’t high waves
They before very high and destructive as they approach shallow water
The speed diminishes and the wave height grows bc the wave energy remains
constant
Waves sometimes get as high as 100 ft and cause great damage to the coast
