Document Summary

1970s, as a response to the populist movement. The leftist unions/groups, media, lower and middle sectors, church, etc. were targeted by the military regime because they opposed the regime. For the first time the middle class and intelligencia (scholars) were targeted as well. It was important to see the repression against unionism because it precludes the flexible labor. Dirty war: argentina, bolivia, chile, and paraguay played into this (operation condor contries). The labor unions lost all their power so workers were casualized, such that turnover rates dramatically increased. There would be a core group of permanent workers and a large number of temporary workers. The rationality is saving costs and only recruiting based on need. Economy: explain the new economic policy initiated by the military dictatorships of the. 70"s and compare &contrast it with the economic policies of the populist era. Populist era: more protectionism, higher barriers, inward orientation. Military regimes: trade barriers were lowers, there was more outward orientation.
