CHM 114 Study Guide - Final Guide: Primary Standard, Phenolphthalein, Purified Water
Document Summary
Purpose: the purpose of the experiment is to standardize two samples of diluted naoh and. First we will use a primary standard to standardize naoh and then use that to standardize. Theory: to standardize a solution is to determine its precise concentration. In the first part of this experiment we will perform two titrations involving a primary standard. A primary standard is something we use to standardize because we know what is in it, that it is of high purity, and how it reacts with the naoh. The primary standard used in this lab is khp, which is also called potassium acid phthalate. When the titration is complete between khp and naoh, we can determine the endpoint with the indicator phenolphthalein. It will turn the solution pink at the end point (not south beach pink). Once we have the standardization of naoh we can then use it to titrate with hcl and determine its exact molarity as well.
