INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY
1. Sociologist can measure objective conditions (Aspect of society that can be either measure
or experience)
2. Sociologist can measure subjective concerns (significant number of people or a number of
significant people (with power) have about an aspect of society
3. Sociologist can apply the sociological imagination (C. Wright Mills, 1959) (refer to the
ability to connect the most basic, intimate aspect of your life to the social context)
There are 3 levels of social context:
Broad: historical events, example war
Narrow: your social location (the most important for sociologist), “where you are located as
an individual within a society” -> personal characteristics: age, race, ethnicity, marital
status, economic status, and religion. Geographical aspect: country, city, and neighborhood.
Social location shapes what you think and what you do.
Sociologist can make predictions about a group of people, no as an individual but as a
prediction.
Intimate: relationship with family, friends, coworkers
4. Sociologist can identify possible social policies ( to address a problem -> suggest potential
causes of action to remedy it)
5. Sociologist can evaluate likely consequences of social policies
What’s the real value of sociology? (Peter L. Berger, 1963)
1. Providing the language of liberation (sociology can be a process of self-discovery) -> our
problems are experiences by other people “you are not alone”
2. Developing the consciousness necessary for freedom (realizing that building your life is
shaped by social forces) -> more freedom to choose for yourself
3. Nurturing the critical thinking necessary for citizenship (you learn to ask questions and not
take things for granted)
4. Nurturing compassion (compassion -> moral registry.)
Sociologist are about empathy (ability of put yourself in someone else shoes) Empathy can
lead to compassion (desire of help a group of people in some way)
5. Undermine prejudices (our culture is not superior to others)
