Defining culture-
“The Meaning of Culture” Rothan (2014)
Rothman uses scholarly evidence to support his claim that culture has 3
divergent meanings which overlap and inform each other:
1.) Activities of artistic and intellectual life
2.) Group Identity
3.) Implicit norms and ways of living
CLASS DISCUSSION-
“It’s our sense of the word “culture” that has grown darker, sharper, more
skeptical. But, if words are tools for thinking, then this year “culture” has
been used to think about the parts of our society that function poorly.”
Do you agree/disagree? Why?
Disagree bc they may be different but a subculture does not
define a culture, and there may be negative connotation but
it doesn't make it consistently dark or bad.
How does Rothman shape his argument?
Through examples of where culture has been trivialized,
which we don't need but want. Also his syntax such as
focusing on rape culture and vape culture, etc.

We will often combine close reading and rhetorical analysis--the two
methods are not mutually exclusive

A method of analysis that operates under the assumption that the
significance of a text is embedded within the text itself and analysis should
derive from close attention to the text’s choices

Idea we can never know exactly what the author intended,
only know what’s on the page. (author is dead or unable to
be reached.)

Shouldn’t judge value of the text by how it makes us feel
