Document Summary
Introduction to philosophical thinking by ann baker p. 3-11. The content of philosophy concerns what philosophers think about. Philosophers think about claims specified, focused assertions that are put forth as being true or false and also about more comprehensive views or positions (composed of many related claims) that purport to answer questions. Method of philosophical thinking requires philosophical habits of mind: two out basic skills are clarifying and justifying claims. Clarification explains or spells out in detail the meaning of the claim. Justification giving reason to believe a claim. Reason for a claim will always be a reason for the truth of the claim. Argument put forth other claims in support of a claim you are defending. An argument is a set of claims, one of which is the occlusion and the others of which are premises that are alleged to make it very likely that a conclusion is true.
