Although the concept of energy is quite familiar, energy is rather difficult to define precisely. We will define energy as the capacity to do work or to produce heat. concentrate on the transfer of energy via heat flow that accompanies chemical processes. One of the most important characteristics of energy is that it is conserved. The law of conservation of energy states that energy can be converted from one form to another but can be neither created nor destroyed. That is, the energy of the universe is constant. The total energy content of the universe is constant. Energy can be classified as either potential energy or kinetic energy. Potential energy is energy due to position or composition. For example, water behind a dam has potential energy that can be converted to work when the water flows down through turbines, thereby creating electricity. Attractive and repulsive forces also lead to potential energy.
