Most kinship came out of rural past. Kinship- complex system of culturally based on: Descent- cultural rule tying people together based upon supposed common ancestry. Nuclear family- consists of single married couple and their children. Extended family- consists of two or more married couples and their children. Patrilineal descent- linking of relatives through males only; females are part of their father"s line, but their children descend from the husband. Matrilineal descent- linking of relatives through females only; males belong to their mother"s line, but their children descended from the wife. Bilateral/bilineal descent- links person to kin through both males and females simultaneously; kinship traced regardless of gender or side of the family; all male and female children are members of both their father"s and their mother"s side. Incest taboo- legal rule prohibiting sexual intercourse or marriage between particular classes of kin. Endogamy- marriage within any particular named group. Exogamy- marriage outside any particular named group.
