Document Summary

The giant tortoises of the gal pagos islands are some of the most famous animals in the world, in part because tortoises from elsewhere are much smaller in body size. Unfortunately, their large size made the gal pagos tortoises a favorite prey for. European sailors who were seeking fresh meat, and several populations were hunted to extinction in the 1800s. Currently 14 species of gal pagos tortoises are named, based on a combination of geography with populations from different islands recognized as different species and the morphology of the carapace (shell). All of the tortoises are herbivores (plant- eaters). A recent study used dna sequence data to estimate the phylogeny of populations from all of the islands, with a special emphasis on exploring the relationship between two populations that live in different areas of santa cruz. Copy and paste this tree into a word document; you will need to refer to it for the questions on this practice exam.
