The diagnostic statistical manual of mental disorders (dsm) is a classification system that describes the symptoms used to diagnose each recognized mental disorder and indicates how the disorder can be distinguished from other, similar problems. The dsm-5 describes 22 major categories with over 200 mental disorders; it describes conditions that could be included as formal disorders but that, for now, require additional research. 1 vulnerability-stress model: each of us has some degree of vulnerability for developing psychological disorder. 2 diathesis-stress model: a person may be predisposed to a psychological disorder that remains unexpressed until triggered by stress.
