Raphael"s death (1520)-end of 16th c. (1600: overlaps with high renaissance. Sense that art is not natural seeing it for what it is paint on canvas, an illusion not real. High renaissance chose to conceal the fact that their works were paintings by using such devices as perspective & shading to make their art look natural. Mannerist artists consciously revealed the constructed nature of their art. High renaissance generally strove to create art that appeared natural, whereas mannerist artists were less inclined to disguise the contrived nature of art production. Imbalanced compositions: unusual complexities, both visual & conceptual, departure from expected conventions, unique presentations of traditional themes. Tintoretto combined titian"s colors with michelangelo"s drawing: monumental drama & deep perspectives. Veronese specialized in splendid pageantry painted in superb color & set within majestic classical architecture.
