Document Summary

Study guide: we live in information saturated culture. How do we keep up: multitasking doesn"t actually work, not efficient. Life experiences shape the way our brains are programmed to function in certain social situations. Take away: we cant physically avoid the glut of information that aggressively seeks our attention in our culture. Instead, we protect ourselves by psychologically avoiding almost all of the messages in the flood of information: we do this by keeping our minds on autopilot most of the time. Learning to tell the difference requires a stronger media literacy perspective. What is media literacy: media literacy- a set of perspectives that we actively use to expose ourselves to the media and interpret the meaning of the messages we encounter. It is multidimensional and a continuum: acknowledges that media can have positive and negative effects on us, media literacy encourages us to adapt to our changing world rather than ignore it.
