Now That I Really Think About It
When I listen to the song “Still Breathing” by Green
Day, I feel positive emotions. It moves me because the
lyrics of this piece emphasize hope. I relate to these
lyrics, and I think that others will too and be moved by this
song. I hypothesize that lyrics that begin with a negative
tone and then transition to more positive statements
throughout the song move people to feel hopeful.
To test my hypothesis, I would measure the brain
activity in the basal ganglia of participants listening to two
tracks. One track would include lyrics beginning with
negative statements transitioning to positive expressions,
and the other would include the same musical track but
with modified lyrics. These modified lyrics would include a
recording of the alphabet being sung with the same
melody.
