Colonoscopy is a way to look for cancer, makes it easier for a person to live longer
- 150,000 Americans a year diagnosed with colon cancer
- 50,000 die from colon cancer ~ 33%
Note:
- Female deaths from cancer
o Lung
o Breast
o Colon
- Male deaths from cancer
o Lung
o Prostate cancer
o Colon
Colon: 90% occur after the age of 50
- Family history
- History of colon polyps
- History of uterine cancer
- Diet
- Sedentary lifestyle
The point of it all
- The Golden Age of Biology
o Advancement of science and technology
o Payoff of scientific method and materialist view of the world
Greatest ideas of all time
- Einstein’s theory space-time
- Marx ideas on labor and capital
- Freud’s idea of the mind
- Religious ideas
- Newton’s contributions
Darwin’s idea of evolution by natural selection
- If 2 same species are put in 2 totally different environment, they could
become very different eventually due to natural selection
- These animals will eventually not be able to interbreed
- Present day species are modification of ancestral species

What is evolution?
- Inherited change in organism over time
Biological Evolution: change in the overall genetic characteristics of a group of
organisms from one generation to next (artificial selection vs. natural selection)
Species: all individuals that could interbreed in their natural surroundings
Population: group of individuals of particular species that share a common habit
Atomsmoleculebiomoleculetissueorganorgan
systemindividualcommunityecosystembiomesbiosphere
Phylogenetic/Evolutionary tree
- Descent with modification
- The tree shows the evolutionary relationship among various species
o Different species are related, not independent creatures
o Species change through time
Natural Selection: evolutionary mechanism that changes the overall genetic
composition of a population from one generation to the next by favoring the survival
and reproduction of individuals best suited to their environment
- Individuals with certain advantageous characteristics survive: adaptive traits
- An editing process with 3 components
o Works on variation in traits
o Works on heritable traits
o Works on traits that influence reproductive success (R.S or fitness)
Result of natural selection
- Higher reproduction success, measured in population are best adapted
- Best engineered to a particular local environment
- Are most fit
Evolution is both a fact and a theory
What do Americans believe?
- 45% of adults believe in god created humans within 10,000 years
- Similar % believe evolution played no role
- 37% believe in both evolution and God
- Devine initiative got things started
- 12% believe humans evolved from other living forms without God
- 88% Americans reject evolution unless God is involved
Beliefs have not changed in 30 years
- That God created humans never been believed by 44% of Americans
