Lecture 1: The Origin of Life
The Origin of Life
Time Scale of Life
o 6000 years old --> chronogeneology
James Ussher
Bishop in England
Measured how old the earth was based on the
Bible
o 9 am on Oct. 23 (6000 years ago)
o 4.6 billion years --> uranium to lead
In old rocks, uranium decomposes into lead
Can measure level of uranium to lead to measure
the age of rock
5 characteristics of life:
1) Life uses energy
2) Organisms consist of cells
3) Living organisms contain and process information
4) Life can replicate itself
5) Life evolves
Eras
o Precambrian: 4.6 billion --> 542 million years (most of the
history of earth is in this era)
4058 million years long
o Paleozoic: 542 my (million yrs) --> 251 my
291 million years long
o Mesozoic: 251 --> 65 my (dinosaurs)
186 million years long
o Cenozoic: 65 my --> present
65 million years long
We don't know scientifically exactly how life originated
Earth cools --> origin of life --> accumulation of oxygen in the
atm --> multicellularity --> animals --> plants colonize land
Fun fact: there are more bacterial cells than human cells on our
body
