LECTURE 1
Central dogma: (replication)DNA>>(transcription)RNA>>(translation)protein
DNA: contains genetic information; double stranded
RNA: creates single stranded DNA through transcription
Protein: possesses catalytic activity, is involved with transcription and translation
EXCEPTIONS TO THE DOGMA:
1) RNA viruses: cannot replicate RNA
2) Telomerase: reverse transcription; goes REVERSE in the central dogma
DNA!! In RNA the 2’ carbon has an OH group
● ATP
LECTURE 2
Chargaff’s Rules: quantitative relationships were key to establishing 3D structure of DNA
1) the base composition of DNA varies from one species to another
2) DNA specimens isolated from different tissues of the same species have the
same base compositions
3) the base composition DNA in a given species does not change with an
organism’s age, nutritional state, or environment
4) A+G = T+C
