Prohibition 1920s in the united states: organized crime ended up with lots of money, lots of high reputation/status, and the american economy went down. Black hand and predatory crime: predatory crime = cruder form of crime, parasitic forms of crime = range of activities (bootlegging, loan sharking, etc, symbiotic = living together and enriching both together. Early forms of organized crime in the united states around 1910 era: predatory crime = simple assault, battery, purse snatching, stick ups, muggings. The black hand is feared in all immigrant communities: nobody sees anything, nobody knows anything. Edwin stier and richards: organized crime as predator (predatory crime, organized crime directs its violent acts outward toward society as a victim, committing crimes such as robbery and extortion by threat of physical harm. It is at this stage that the group relies on outer-directed violent crime as its primary source of income.
