CRM/LAW C156 Study Guide - Final Guide: Illegal Immigration, Labeling Theory, Larceny
Document Summary
Violent crimes in neighborhoods affect families, individuals, friends, and visitors alike. It reduces the economic value of an area, as investors are afraid to commit their funds. Crime in a neighborhood should not be allowed to continue unabated as it metamorphoses into more dangerous forms of corruption. Understanding the cause of criminal activities makes it easier to design effective interventions. Whereas it is easy to establish the link between poverty and crime, it is not so with immigration. In addition to a standard set of punishments for natives, immigrants face the risk of deportation, which deters them from committing violent crimes. However, immigrants who settle in poor neighborhoods can contribute to an increase in property and violent crimes albeit indirectly by absorbing jobs meant for the natives. This paper will explore some theories that explain how criminal gangs can form around such neighborhoods.
