Individual differences: hypochondriacs are people who are obsessed with the idea of having a serious but undiagnosed medical condition. They think normal bodily functions are indicators of illness. Women are not more likely to report these symptoms but the elderly are more likely to report symptoms then younger people. People who are high in neuroticism recognize and report their symptoms more quickly. Attentional differences: people who are more focused on their bodies and their self are more likely to recognize symptoms, also people who are bored, alone or not happy recognize symptoms more quickly. Medical student disease: as medical students study each illness, many medical students imagine that they have it. Stress: people who are under stress may believe they are more vulnerable to an illness and so they attend more closely to their bodies. Mood: people who are in a good mood rate themselves as more healthy and report fewer illnesses and symptoms.
