Probably better to think about three different ways operationalization was done: schyn"s study: what should we conclude. Looked at the relationship between income and happiness and found that it is a noisy relationship and wanted to use different cultures to explain this noisiness. The effect of income on happiness differs depending on the culture and found that is no clear explanation for the noise and why there is a different effect in different cultures. The psychometric model states that the right operationalization should have certain statistical properties such as consistency across populations. Throw a bunch of questions at different people and see which ones work the best across populations and then apply statistical criteria. The ones that ask a single question about how one is feeling follows the psychometric model. Vending machine model: philosophic theory -- how to operationalize happiness.
