1617 Introduces Tabacco to Virgina.
Tabacco becomes the gold of Virginia.
1625 years later the colonies are producing 200,000 lbs of tobacco per year
1638 3,000,000 lbs of taboo per year
1620 on- Virginia becomes a royal colony (governed by the king)
1619 House of Burgesses: first elected assembly in Virginia (possibly first democratic idea)
White Virginia males who own land can vote
Technically the King of England can overthrow anything they say, but the King really has no
idea what the House of B. is
Governor is directly appointed by the king
Land: social and economic identity. Grow lots of tobacco= rich
Headlight System: a to eourage settleet of Eglishe. If ou oe to the oloies,

1640- things get better.
The fact that Virginia gets healthy (better) now proposes new problems:
competition for growing tobacco
everyone wants more land
indentured servants contracts expire (more competition for tobacco) and buy land in the
west
Native Americans live extremely close to the land the previous indentured servants are trying
to use
Virginia governors decide to be dicks: 1670- Virginia governors worried expansion too far to the
west (50 miles)
They decide to allow "no further expansion to the west." This upsets the previous indentured
servants who had just become free to do what they want with their land in the West.
Daniel Bacon: wealthy guy comes over and asks for permission to take the former indentured
servants and clear some more land from the native americans.
Governor says: "No, e do’t at to fight the Natie Aerias."
Bacon says: I do hat I at."
Civil War: “Baon’s Reellion"
Bacon at first does pretty well:
Forces the King to flee.
Burns Jamestown.
Bacon dies of disease (very anticlimactic). Rebellion wanted to seize the capital of
Virginia. Goeror takes it ak ad eeutes seeral e of Bao’s reellio to proe a poit.
What was learned from this war: indentured servitude is not the long term idea here.
Permanent servitude is needed.
Some historians say this battle caused the colonist to turn to slavery.
A uthikig deisio -there is no exact date that slavery starts in Virginia
1619- first Afrias arrie i Virgiia. “ae ear House of B. started iroi. It’s said that the
were treated somewhat equally at first.
