ENGL 91C Midterm: Jane Eyre
Document Summary
Charlotte bront "s jane eyre an autobiography tells the growing up story of jane eyre in 19th century england. Jane"s journey portrays the harsh realities of being a poor orphaned girl in the victorian era (she is neglected and abused), and the progress she achieves through the empowerment of education and affection. Even though she is faced with the inherent handicaps, along with the difficulty of receiving an education as a 19th century woman, eyre finds no need to become dependent on social conformity. Bront goes as far as to widen jane"s independent character through the use of female foils: georgiana reed"s vanity is both met with conflict, while helen burns" sanctity highlights jane"s aspirations. Jane"s formative years at gateshead hall are miserable. She lives with her aunt, through marriage, mrs. reed, her cousins georgiana, john, and eliza reed, and the house workers bessie and abbot.
