Human nature is pathetic -- pathos, humans behave on account of their emotions and civil society needs to deal w them, tame and manage them; human life is compared to a race, constantly running against others. Virtues and emotions are aspects of this competition. Leviathan, chapter xiv: of the first and second natural laws and of contracts. The right of nature . conceive to be the aptest .
