PSYCH 10: Lab #1 Worksheet
Experiment 1: 5 minute delay
1. List the independent variable and dependent variable in this experiment. How did
Roediger & Karpicke operationalize the dependent variable?!
The independent variable is the study method— having the student either restudy the passage or
take a practice test before writing down what they have retained. The dependent variable is the
percentage of correct information they were able to write down following either restudying or
testing themselves on the passage. The dependent variable was operationalized through having
one group restudy the material and the other test themselves through a practice test and noting
the differences between the two study techniques by comparing the % correct of retained
material for both groups.
2. What is your hypothesis (what impact do you predict the IV will have on the DV)?
Students will recall more information five minutes after reading a passage by rereading the
passage rather than testing themselves on it.
3. Imagine 6 students come into the lab to participate in this study (see schedule below)
and we want to use random assignment to assign the participants to the Restudy
and Practice Test conditions.
Participant Schedule
Gurgit - Monday Aug 5 @ 2:00pm
Sally –Monday Aug 5 @ 3:00pm
Han –Monday Aug 5 @ 4:00pm
Amanda - Tuesday Aug 6 2:00pm
Walt– Tuesday Aug 6 @ 4:00pm
Rosa – Tuesday Aug 6 @ 5:00pm
A) What is random assignment and why should we use it?
Random assignment is the practice of randomly assigning participants to treatment groups in an
experiment. This should be used as it limits bias and variability among the participants in the
groups, ensuring more representative and “equal” participants in each group.
