Document Summary

Descriptive statistics (covered in midterm 1: summarize data using a few values/pictures. Probability: tells us how likely/unlikely something is. Sampling distributions (above three covered in midterm 2: how likely/unlikely certain samples of data are. ^ all 4 topics = statistical inference (covered in final: take samples of data, and our understanding of their probability, to make conclusions. Understand world around us: statistics allows us to make conclusions from limited data. Every question has a relevant population: population = everyone/everything that can be used to answer a research question. In general, a population is too large to be studied directly. A key factor as to why we have statistics. Instead, we study a sample: sample = a selection of people/subjects, based on observations in sample to make conclusions about the population = statistical inference, making conclusions on limited data. Samples need to be representative of the population to ensure our conclusions about the population are valid.
