Document Summary

Everything in the female reproductive system occurs because of estrogen or progesterone: estrogen is highest right before ovulation, estrogen aids in conception, progesterone aids in pregnancy maintenance, the entire reproductive system of the cow is pushed right. The lumen is on the left: 3 days before birth, everything producing progesterone stops. Cervix dilates, everything goes back to how it functioned under estrogen. Cervix: serves as barrier to outside world, cervical canal. Can be open or dilated: opening to cervix is called the os cervix. Gets much larger/dilates in the presence of estrogen. Insemination pipette in cows is placed into os cervix, and semen is deposited right into uterine body. The cervix is hard; everything else is soft. Rectum of horse is very delicate; rectal palpation is not recommended for horses. Directionality in animal is always from the rear of the animal: left flank of rear left uterine horn, etc. Vagina: a duct, vaginal cavity lumen.
