Symbol- something used for or regarded as representing something else. Human communication- the process of managing messages for the purpose of creating shared meaning, process of creating a meaning between 2 or more people. Messages- verbal or nonverbal; intentional or unintentional. Verbal message- any type of spoken communication that uses one or more words. Intentional verbal- conscious attempts to communicate with others through speech. Unintentional verbal- things we say without meaning to, unconsciously motivated. Nonverbal- messages we transmit without words or over and above the words we use. Unintentional nonverbal- nonverbal aspects of behavior transmitted without our control. Container fallacy- false to believe that meanings are carried or contained by words. Ex. visa credit card vs. work visa. Channels- medium through which a message is sent. Channel of face to face communication- sensory organs.
