One of the most virulent food borne pathogens. Disease can be mild but serious for pregnant women where it can lead to spontaneous abortion of fetus. Healthy people produce immune response and deal with it normally w antibody memory. Peritrichous flagella below 30c but not flagella above 37c. Intracellular parasite- starts out life cycle inside host cells. Taken into host cell by phagocytosis then prodcues enzyme to escape phagosome. Can grow in phagocytic cells and procures explosive polymerization of actin filaments uses filaments to ride from one cell to another. Beta hemolytic- if you grow it on a blood agar plate youll see a white ring bc it produces enzyme called hemolysin. Can be killed w alcohol based hand sanitizers. Found in raw milk, cheeses, ice cream, raw vegetables, processed meats. Lives in the intestines of warm and cold blooded animals. Passes through feces into soil and water systems.
