When we first started out, the number of humans were really small. Hunter-gatherers societies became agricultural-based societies about 10000 years ago (first agricultural revolution/ neolithic revolution) In the year 1 ad, there was around 200 million people, equivalent to modern germany, Around 1600 ad, the world population was only 500 million, equivalent to modern usa, Population growth speeds up in the 19th century ad. This spike was because we finally learned how to live healthier lives by the 1800s. Malthusian theory only grow linearly (the food couldn"t keep up with the population) : population would increase exponentially whereas food supply would. Malthus wrote (in 1800!) about possible overpopulation and resource scarcity. Neo-malthusians (new guy following malthus) kept advocating malthus" beliefs (paul ehrlich) : human ingenuity said we are too smart to ever run out of resources; we will always find a way to make due; adding extra people also adds extra brain power.
