The cell is full of stuff (cid:523)proteins, ions, fats (cid:524) Ordinarily, these would cause huge osmotic pressures, sucking water into the cell. The cell membrane has no structural strength, and the cell would burst. Example: glucose-na+ symport in plasma membranes of some epithelial cells. The movement of one or more solutes down their concentration gradients provides energy for the movement of other solutes against their concentration gradients.
