Document Summary

Long term memory (ltm) vs short term memory (stm): Dynamic (pattern of activity connections within a group of among group of cells) Misplacement and/or retrieval failure (the information is there, just not accessible) Proactive interference = old information affects memory of new information. Writing 2016 on homework until march of 2017. Retroactive interference = new information affects memory of old information. Not remembering the phone number of the house you grew up in. Subjects were shown lists of words and asked to use one of three strategies -- visual. Craik & tulving"s (1975) experiment on elaborative rehearsal: (shallow), acoustic/phonological (intermediate), or semantic (deep) -- and then asked to recall words. Of the three learning strategies, semantic works best, and visual is least effective. Incidental learning took place, meaning subjects remembered the words without even trying, just through the process of the experiment. Episodic = episodes/events, with a time and place. I saw an elephant at the zoo in 1988.
