Document Summary

Requires: two samples came from populations that have roughly the same distributional shape. Useful for datasets that: have very small sample sixes, have non-normal distributions, cannot be transformed to normal, cannot use rank sum test because of large number of ties. Step 0: choose an appropriate summary statistic of the data; eg. sum, sum of ranks, etc. Step 1: compute the chosen statistic based on the two independent samples. Step 2: list all regroupings of the n1+n2 numbers into group sizes of n1 and n2. Step 3: count the number of regroupings that produce a test statistic value that is as or more extreme that the observed value. Choose: sum(group1) sum (group2) regroupings be r. (r=(1+21 ) ). Exercises: consider a phase ii clinical trial designed to investigate the effectiveness of a new drug to reduce symptoms of asthma in children. A total of n=16 participating are randomized to receive either the new drug or a placebo.
