Lecture 6 Psych and Religion- Carl Jung
topics
The Scientific Worldview
psyche= soul, spirit ology= knowledge
Myths and Logos: The Moon
Logos: logical, rational, common sense, what we know must ultimately be able to be seen, measured, perceived by senses,
practitioners believe it’s the only form of knowledge and truth
mythos: truths are not so objective, felt on the blood, once was more powerful than logos,
mythos goes for meaning, often springs from the unconscious, more powerful, more meaningful
una luna de miel- a moon of honey, honeymoon
Freud and Jung
Jung is more of a moon knowledge than just scientific. According to him, we are incredibly complex.
Talks about us having a horizontal and vertical dimension of existence
Horizontal and Vertical Dimensions of Existence
horizontal dimension develops in us bc we always have day to day practical demands of life (realm of logos)The Collective Unconscious -Sun
Phallus
the vertical dimension is the realm of magic and poetry, music, spiritual, time stops, creative flow, peak experiences, some other state of
consciousness, mystical union: when you feel like you have joined with he divine (realm of mythos)
Sources of the Theory:non ordinary source of consciousness gained usually from vertical dimensinsion
Jungians =most interested in your dreams
believe: dreams= royal road to unconscious
“if you study them for a lifetime, dreams work in good harmony"
dreams compensate for our waking life. ex. outgoing people dream characters of passivity
when we can drop down to the darkness, that’s the way to transformation
Individuation (whole developmental life process in the spiritual journey, it involves encounter with and integration of recognizable developmental markers
aka personality archetypes) 
Personality Archetypes (something we inherit, deep pattern, dry riverbed, that exist in us which we then fill up with our own content)
The Ego: gives us a sense of consistency, gives us a sense of autonomy, becomes the center of our consciousness, contains mental
function of memory, ability to plan, focus, attend, rationality, thought, also physical functions, start to separate ourselves from our unconscious,
threatened by unconscious
The Persona “the conformity archetype” : helps us adapt, move along horizontal line, our social self, contains values, social attitudes, we can
over-identify with our persona, should be something we can take off and put on when needed, under-developed persona is just as bad as over-
identifying
help us navigate horizontal plane

“If you look into an eyes of a baby, look into their absence of fear, you are looking into the soul of the individual, babies are wide open.
There’s something ancient there."
It grows as it develops its sense of ego
The Shadow: parts of ourselves that we don’t want to be, we shove behind us.
the more over-identified a person is with their own persona, the more chance there is of them being taken over by their shadow
contains our childhood wounds and traumas, addictions, humiliations/shame, our guilt/rage, inferiorities, insecurities/self-hatred
shadow= bat cave
