Semantics is the study of the meaning of language. Two type of language: natural and artificial. E. g. programming language is an artificial language. Languages allow you to convey meaning about things that are not in reality. Talk about the past/future or other possible realities. Only 5% of the languages spoken in the world have a writing system. Information as comprehended by the speaker"s listener. Language is a communicative system of symbols. A way to build a bridge between a linguistic expression and concept/things in the world. Mapping between a linguistic expression and the objects and ctegories we have structured the world into. Also applies to communication devices aside from language. Will not be the topic of this class. Connecting two different facts in the world. People agree on the meaning of linguistic expressions through external reality. Meaning is not just a social practice. Social rules dictate a need for an appropriate answer.
