when feeling fear people report feelinging motivated to
run away
fear most often occurs in dangerous situations
the body has a particular response when someone
feels fear
BUT: freezing happens- maybe it motivates people
avoid threats not just flee
How do you know that you are experiencing an emotion?
Measuring emotions
Self-reports
o Fast and easy, but have questionable accuracy
If you think they are measuring anger may say that
But we use it because it’s the only way to measure
subjective experience
People could be controlling, may not know what they are
feeling,
Behavioral observations
o Less consciously controlled but still controllable but they can sort of.
Multiple interpretations
Don’t exactly know why the behavioral response is occurring
Physiological measures
o Harder to consciously control, but ambiguous meaning
Because they are feeling intense emotion, just moving
around? Which emotion?
Paul Ekman’s Basic Emotions
First was 6: sadness, anger, surprise, happiness, disgust, fear
Then added contempt
o The other emotions are just more specific versions of that
Basic Emotions Theory
Basic emotions theory says that were born wth certain specific emotions,
theyre innate and discrete from one another
o All other emotions are made up of combinations of these basic
emotions
An alternate approach
