Prehension and mastication: mechanical breakdown of food into smaller pieces to increase surface area, saliva secreted as lubricant, deglutition: peristaltic waves when swallowing food. Stomach: physical and chemical breakdown (by acids/enzymes) Small intestine: duodenum: bile from liver balances ph/pancreatic excretions, jejunum: absorption through villi, ileum: absorption. Large intestine: colon, cecum (important to non-ruminant herbivores), and rectum, water, electrolytes, vitamins, minerals, and vfa"s absorbed.
